DALI-2 Seminar

DiiA will present a seminar entitled; "DALI-2: The global standard for smart, digital, lighting control in the IoT era"

>> Presentations are available below

The first part of the seminar will focus on the benefits of DALI for lighting control, including a comparison with other approaches. Presenters from DiiA, Scott Wade and Ronald Tol, will describe the DALI-2 certification program, its impact on interoperability, and its expansion to cover all product types including input devices (e.g. sensors). See the "Learning Objectives" section for more details. There will be time at the end of this section for questions and further discussion.

The second part of the seminar will focus on intra-luminaire DALI. Mike O’Boyle of Signify will discuss ANSI’s standardization work (ANSI C137.4 Working Group) related to intra-luminaire DALI, which builds on specifications recently published by DiiA.

Kevin Fitzmaurice will describe Georgia Power’s very large street-lighting project (see Case Study article), and how DALI is the lighting protocol of choice for outdoor lighting. This section will end with a short panel discussion, and speakers will take questions from the audience.

Presentation materials will be available here on the day before the seminar.

Learning objectives

The first section of the seminar will:

  • Explain how digital lighting-control products based on the global DALI-2 standard can be used to build robust, scalable and flexible lighting networks.
  • Analyze the major changes that DALI-2 brings, including standardization of control devices, along with significant improvements in interoperability backed by the DALI-2 certification program.
  • Identify some of the common misconceptions about DALI, and compare DALI with other protocols, including 0-10V analog control.
  • Describe smart DALI LED drivers that are capable of reporting energy-usage and diagnostic data, and explain how DiiA works with organizations such as ANSI C137.4 Working Group and the Zhaga Consortium on further standardization.

Speaker biographies

Dr. Scott Wade has been Technical & Certification Manager for DiiA, and previously the DALI working group, since August 2013. He developed and implemented the DALI-2 certification program on behalf of DiiA. For around 14 years, he has been an industry expert member of the IEC 62386 standardisation team. Prior to DiiA/DALI, Dr. Wade was NPI Director for Electronics and Systems at Honeywell ED&S, and prior to that was at Helvar, most recently as R&D Manager for Lighting Controls. Dr. Wade holds a Ph.D. in Power Electronics, and an M.Eng. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Kevin Fitzmaurice is the Principal Engineer of lighting and smart services at Georgia Power. He has more than 34 years of lighting and energy related experience. Fitzmaurice earned degrees in Electronics Engineering Technology and Computer Science. He currently serves as Chair of the ANSI C136 standards committee for roadway and area lighting products and is a member of several other ANSI standards committees related to lighting and metering. Fitzmaurice is a long-time member of the Illuminating Engineering Society—currently serving on the roadway lighting committee and the street and area lighting conference planning committee. He is also Lighting Certified by the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions.
