New Edition of Part 202 for self-contained emergency

January 11, 2023

IEC has published Edition 2.0 of Part 202 of IEC 62386, the international standard that defines the digital addressable lighting interface.

IEC 62386-202:2022 is entitled “Digital addressable lighting interface - Part 202: Particular requirements for control gear - Self-contained emergency lighting (device type 1)” and is available from the IEC webstore.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2009. The edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

  • scope updated,
  • hardwired switch operation can be disabled,
  • installation inhibit feature added,
  • memory bank added,
  • modes of operation clarified, with some changes and additions,
  • command added to enter extended emergency mode,
  • command added to extend time in duration test mode.

Part 202 provides the basis for DALI-2 certification of self-contained emergency control gear.

DALI-2 certification is based on the IEC 62386 standard, but there are some small differences. DALI Alliance members that are working towards product certification should continue to use the version (edition/amendment) of each IEC 62386 Part that is listed in the “Allowed Parts of IEC 62386” document, available here.

Another essential document for product developers is “Clarifications and Recommendations for IEC 62386.” This is an additional set of requirements that are necessary for DALI-2 certification, and is available on our member website.
