At Manchester Airport, a DALI lighting-control system in Terminal 2 was extended to Terminals 1 and 3, with DALI occupancy and daylight sensors installed in all areas. Individual control panels connect the DALI control bus to the BACnet-based building management system (BMS) via L-DALI controllers from Loytec.  The fully dynamic lighting-control system makes uses of natural daylight as well as newly-installed LED luminaires, and provides full system monitoring of energy consumption and device status.

The lighting-control system uses energy as and when required, with luminaires powered on only when light levels drop below a pre-set threshold and when there is occupancy presence in these areas. Furthermore, the BMS was linked to the flight information system, so that light levels at individual gates within the time can respond to real-time flight scheduling.

Significant reductions in energy consumption have been achieved; in Terminal 3, the energy consumption was reduced by 65% by installing LED luminaires, and by a further 68% when lighting control was implemented. The total reduction in energy consumption was 89%.

The entire system has 9,500 DALI ballasts and 1,200 DALI multi-sensors, and uses 82 Loytec controllers (LDALI-ME204).

The DALI lighting system was implemented by Calon Associates, a Loytec Competence Center, in cooperation with Building Environment Control Ltd.
