Project title: St Leonard's College - The Leonardian Auditorium

Location: Brighton East, Victoria, Australia

Category: Medium indoor projects - WINNER

OVERVIEW AND JUDGES' COMMENTS:

The project involved illumination of an auditorium with general lighting, wall washing and feature accents to wall panels. DALI was used within the project to deliver high performance and reliable light scene setting. A key requirement was smooth dimming to pre-show darkness to full brightness without perceived steps. This was possible thanks to the use of DALI to dim smoothly right down to 0.1%. The integration with other control devised such as automated time clock allows the setting of time-based triggers and smart energy control. And  with many fittings installed in difficult to access locations, the asset management and predictive maintenance features were also important aspects of the DALI installation.

“This project also stood out for its lighting design,” said the judges. “Achieving this level of uniformity from limited mounting positions shows a level of technical skill in design and luminaire specification. Subtle touches like the low-level aisle lighting, the contrast in the panelling, the wall-washing working together with that contrast, all confirm the value of the lighting designer input in a space like this. The ability to create house-light scenes and control those scenes from the stage desk is another asset.

The standout aspect here is the attention to the switch-on, switch-off performance – perhaps not the most glamorous part of a lighting design, but it’s so often overlooked and is very important.”

What did the project set out to achieve?

Illumination of an Auditorium, with general lighting, wall washing and feature accents to wall panels. The main requirement was smooth dimming to zero and from zero.

How is DALI used within the project?

  • 28x Iguzzini Pixel Pro downlights with Eldoled dim-to-zero DALI drivers for general area lighting
  • 20x Iguzzini Laser Blade L wallwasher with Eldoled dim-to-zero drivers for wallwashing of side walls
  • 10x Iguzzini Palco 86mm track mounted wallwasher with Tridonic built-in DALI driver for wallwashing of back wall
  • 15x Iguzzini Palco track mounted with Tridonic build in DALI driver for general area lighting
  • 33m of Aldabra Path (unknown driver) for skirting light

Why was DALI chosen?

The auditorium is used for different events, from theatre shows to lectures, hence requiring different light scene settings. The digital lighting control was essential due to this high performance dimming requirement. In theatre mode it is imperative that the house lighting control system is integrated with the theatre lighting console. This was made possible thanks to Dynalite control system integration.

The other important requirement was smooth dimming to dark (pre-show) and smooth dimming from dark to full brightness without perceived steps. This was possible thanks to the use of eldoLED DALI drivers capable of dimming smoothly to 0.1% for most of the general lighting fittings.

The track-mounted fittings are equipped with Tridonic drivers dimming to 1%, so we had to program different fading times for different groups of fittings to avoid the perception of "steps" between the 1% and 0%.

What benefits does DALI provide?

DALI enables the design requirements to be met, providing a smooth intuitive control capability for the users. Enabling different lighting scenes, it provides the most effective and comfortable light setting for each use of the space.

The integration with other control devices such as an automated time clock allows the setting of time- based triggers like "switch off after midnight and no movement detected for 30 minutes" allowing energy control (no lights accidentally kept switched on overnight).

Furthermore, with many fittings installed in difficult to access locations, the asset management and predictive maintenance features are an important aspect of the DALI installation.
